W ritten Over five
hundred years ago, the medieval mystery plays tell the story of the world
from creation to doomsday. With earthly comedy and often hauntingly
beautiful in their simplicity, the Mysteries take us on a whirlwind
journey of powerful emotions, combining the greatest stories ever told
with a compelling sense of drama. The mood throughout is carnival,
outrageous flamboyance and passionate excess. Grab the moment. Only one
thing in life is for sure...Carpe Diem!
MYSTERIES 2000 will create at the
end of this millennium, and leading us into a new millennium: a
collaboration between a number of leading Irish playwrights and poets
centred on the seminal texts of the Christian Myth which are, after Greek
Drama the beginnings of Modern theatre as we know it. We look to our poets
and playwrights to tell us stories of who we are, there’s no more
appropriate a time than now.
The playwrights involved include Joe O Connor, Aidan
Matthews, Declan Hughes, Pat Kinivane, Gavin Kostick, Fergus Linehan,
Johnny Hanrahan, Joe O’Byrne, Michael McCaffery, Mary Elizabeth
Burke-Kennedy, Declan Gorman, Deirdre Purcell, Brendan Kennelly, and Nuala
Ni Domhnaill.
A multicultural ensemble of twenty actors including
James Watson, Klaus Hassel, Victor Burke, Derek Chapman, Andre
Edmunds, Cynthia Buchan and Phyllis Ryan forms the cast for
MYSTERIES 2000
together with live musicians and dancers. This promenade production (with
seating), directed by Michael Scott with costume design by Synan
O’Mahony and set design by Bronwen Casson opens on November 1st.
Bending the rules for ordinary theatre shows is part of
The Machine’s raison d'être and
MYSTERIES 2000
promises to be a provocative and sensational evening of interactive
theatre at it’s most enjoyable.
